ENCHANTMENT Book One of The Channie Series

Paranormal Platinum Award Winner

OVERVIEW
When Channie Belks moves from her home in the Ozark mountains to a suburban Colorado high school, she tries to hide the fact she's a mage. It might have worked until her parents slapped a chastity curse on her for flirting with "dirty-minded, non-magical, city-boys." She can't even walk by a hot guy without zapping him.

There's a way to break the curse; but one mistake could kill her. It's not worth the risk. Until she meets Josh…a BMX champion with a dazzling smile, washboard abs and the bluest eyes she’s ever seen.

Suddenly, the threat of death isn't such a deal-breaker.

***WARNING*** The characters in this book swear. They also think about, talk about and sometimes engage in sexual behavior.

Enchantment The Channie Series Book 1 eBook Charlotte Abel

This is a weird abstinence-based magical fantasy. Enchantment, normally called Channie, lives with her mage family in the Ozarks. Her father gets into gambling trouble with a nearby mage clan and the family has to flee to another state, where they are surrounded by "empties" (non-magic users). Channie's parents are afraid of the impact Enchantment, her "power name," will have on the boys in their new area. These "empties" won't have the ability to shield themselves from the charm carried in the name. So they use forcible magic to change her name to Chastity. This changes the basis of her magic and power -- it literally makes her own sexuality poison to herself and those around her. Unfortunately for their plan, this move serves to jumpstart Channie's interest in wielding that sexuality and she begins a relationship with a boy in the neighborhood.

Taking a familial/societal expectation of female purity and turning it into a magically enforced mandate is an interesting idea, but the execution is awkward because Abel never seems to come to terms with how unjustified this attempt at control is. The idea that Channie's sexuality, if controlled by her, is a danger to herself and those around her isn't rejected as much as it is embraced and the plot is an reinforcement of the tired cliche that female sexuality should only be accepted when it is firmly tethered and controlled by a more powerful male.

The book (which is part of a trilogy) ends with Channie literally stripped of magic. She's confined to bed -- not just to recover from injuries, but to please her powerful mage husband as a child bride. He's the great power the next books will focus on. It's incredibly disappointing.

Enchantment The Channie Series Book 1 eBook Charlotte Abel Reviews

Channie grew up in a magical community, up until her father’s gambling problem forces them to flee and live among the “Magically Disabled,” that is. And now Channie must hide the fact that she is a witch.

The idea of power names is interesting for sure, but I don’t know that I’m completely sold on it. Channie’s power name was Enchantment which, well, brought all the boys to the yard, and her parents are like, "Um, yeah no."

So her worried parents changed her power name to Chastity... Ha! I mean, I do love me a good witchy book! That being said, I didn’t like this very much =/ The use of magic in this was just... fine.

The characters themselves were too out there. The dialogue was over the top and their ignorance was beyond belief! And the parents were a special kind of something... they were awful! They were vindictive and abusive—both verbally and magically. I mean, here is this family throwing magic left and right—at their own family! The parents give Channie these awful punishments, and Channie talked back to her parents so much and demanded things of them and even threatened them with magic! If I would’ve done this to my parents (minus the magic part, of course), I would’ve gotten the freaking chancla!

Channie’s behavior was frustrating! She was immature, obnoxious, disrespectful, and a spoiled brat! Of course, I can’t fully blame her because there was zero mutual respect between the children and the parents. None! The parents aren’t very good role models, to begin with, so I don’t know how they expect their children to be any better than them.

Some characters I actually liked were the triplets! They were the cutest things ever! I liked Josh, too, mostly. But the romance... ugh! So much freaking lust! Too much, in fact. The romance was cheesy and annoying and it left little room for anything else, like, I don't know, story. Too much horny teenagers, not enough of anything else.

I am just so annoyed with this book because it had potential! There was barely any story, too much of lusting teenagers and just—I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought or hoped I would, unfortunately.
I bought this book on a hunch, thinking it looked like fun. Turned out to be even better than I expected. The writing is superb, really polished plot and characters. The ideas are smart too as this book is the essence of fiction, creating a whole new world to get lost in. I liked the assortment of magic, different spells, power levels and how it played into the tale, which had plenty of surprises. All of the characters are believable and felt real, even though their experiences are anything but ordinary.
Very fun book. Definitely a page turner. I'm ready for the sequel.
